Surrendering a Pet

The Humane of Kodiak/Kodiak Animal Shelter is an open-admission shelter; we accept all pets, except wildlife, who come through our doors. We understand that sometimes it may be necessary to give up a pet and we will do our very best to place yours into a new home.

We do our best to reduce as much stress as possible to all the pets placed in our care. However, shelters are places with many animals and strangers, new routines, are noisy and can be stressful to animals that are accustomed to being in a home environment.

Once a pet has settled in with us we take the following steps to assist with rehoming them:

  • Physical examination to check skin, coat, eyes, ears, etc for any possible illnesses and/or injuries

  • Vet visit(s) for any required exams, vaccinations, medical treatments and spay/neuter, if necessary

  • Microchipping, if not already done so

  • Temperament testing

  • Bathed and/or groomed

  • Our waitlist is checked to see if we have a match for possible adoption. If there is no match, we will then place the pet up for adoption and they will be listed on our website and Facebook page.

For your convenience you may fill out and submit your surrender paperwork prior to arriving. Please fill the form out completely and put as much detail as possible. The more information we have about your pet and their likes/dislikes the easier it will be to place them in the right household.

When you bring your pet to the shelter please make sure to bring:

  • Vet records, if pet has been to a vet other than the Kodiak Vet Clinic

  • Any and all medications the pet may have.

  • Favorite toy(s). These can assist them with reducing stress

  • Food

  • Or any other item that belongs to the pet

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us and we will do our best to assist you.
